Go Retro: Singapore’s hidden gems

Updated: Jun 26, 2020

Chanced upon a stall with quirky biscuits from yesteryears.

The “toy biscuits”, literal translation from Cantonese kong-chai-pang.

The “cigarette wafers”, yin-chai-pang.

The “belly button biscuits”, to chee pang.

And a lot more. It brings you down memory lane. Reminds you of what life in the 70’s was like for kids without fast food, food delivery, cup noodles or chips in a bag. Can’t help but buy some of those crunchy wafers to go with my sherbet. Shared a whiff of my childhood with the kids, turning a simple treat to another one of those conversations we have with them millennials.

“You know ah, those days we..…. blahblahblah”. You can imagine how they roll their eyes…. and then gobble up the whole bag of wafers with the sherbet. Of course my story fell on deaf ears...… but the sherbet was great with wafers!
